Of course, in those few cases where there is no agent
in the town, and you are ordering for cash, you will
have to include your freight charges with your order.
Here's How to Estimate EXPRESS CHARGES
To estimate express charges, see the table at the right.
It's very simple to use. Simply find the weight of your
shipment in the first column. Then look in the columns
at the right
to
determine the express charge required
according to the distance.
Example:
Suppose your order weighs 25 pounds and you
live 190 miles from the shipping point. You would use
the 200-mile rate to find the approximate charge. The
tableat the right shows that 74c would be the estimated
charge.
If
the shipment weighs 200 pounds, the charge
would be twice the 100-pound rate of $2.25, or $4.50.

Here's How to Estimate FREIGHT CHARGES
BUILD UP YOUR FREIGHT SHIPMENT TO 100
POUNDS. The minimum charge for any rail freight
shipment is the rate for 100 pounds,
l>ut
it
is never less
than 58 cents.
Minimum charge by truck may in some
instances slightly exceed the hundred-pound rail rate.
Charges on shipments over 100 pounds, however, are
based on actual weight.
If
your order weighs less
than 100 pounds, it
will
be to your advantage to order
future needs and build your order up to 100 pounds.
On·freight orders of 100 pounds or less, made up of
several articles taking different freight rates, the
highest rate applies to the entire shipment.
Suppose you are ordering a mattress weighing 50 lbs.
and 40 lbs. of oil, making a total of 90 lbs. to be
shipped 100 miles. The table at the right tells you that
the rate for a mattress is
64c
for 100 lbs., or 32c for
50 lbs.; and the rate for oil is 46c for 100 lbs., or 18c
for 40 lbs. Adding the two charges together would
make a total of
50c.
However, because the minimum
freight charge is the rate for 100 lbs. of the highest
rated article in the shipment, the freight charge on
this order would be 64c.
Some heavy articles are shipped direct from factory
to save handling charges. In such cases, the catalog
description gives the point of shipment. Items shipped
from the factory may be ordered along with other
catalog items, but shipping charges on factory items
must always be figured separately.
Spiegels Lower Shipping Charges policy applies to
freight orders, too. Freight orders are shipped from
Spiegels seven shipping points. Except
in
the case of
factory shipments, you pay only the low freight rate
from the Spiegel shipping point nearest your home.

FREIGHT CHARGES ARE BASED ON THE
.ACTUAL DISTANCE THE SHIPMENT IS
HAULED. The distance to use in estimating your
freight
char~es
is the distance from your home to the
shipping pomt nearest you-except for factory ship–
ments in which case you use the distance from your
home to the factory:
The rates shown in the table are, of course, only esti–
mated charges for the distances indicated.
If
you want
to know the exact charge, ask; your freight agent.
If
there is no freight agent in your town and you are ordering for cash, use the table
to estimate how much money to include for freight charges. Don't be afraid of sending
too much money. Any over-payment
will
be refunded promptly-to the penny.
To estimate the freight on your order, simply find the article you are ordering in the
list below. Then refer to the columns at the right of the article to determine the freight
charges required according to the shipping distance.
Example:
Suppose you live
in
Harrisburg, Pa. and want to order furniture weighing 100
pounds. Your nearest shipping point is Pittsburgh, Pa.-about 200 miles away. The rate
table below shows the 200-mile freight rate for 100 pounds of furniture to be 88 cents.
