WHAT MAKES ONE DOLL COST MORE THAN ANOTHER? The value of a doll to a child cannot be stated in terms
of money; however, some of the factors that influence the cost of a doll are discussed here to serve as
qeneral
information for doll purchasers.
In
the main, the cost of a doll
ls
determined by the quality of material and
workmanship ln bodies, wigs, eyes and clothing. Size
Is
a secondary factor-a small, fine quality doll may
cost more than a much larger doll of poorer quality.
BODIES. Today most doll
parts
are made of composition. Though quality varies to some extent with ingredients
used,
it ls determined more by lenqth of time taken in making and finishing. Doll
parts
made slowly are Jess
fragile. Quality is determined, too, by Uneness of detail in features such as hands .•. on fine dolls fingers are
separated and hands have We-like details such as tinted linqernails .and tiny palm markings.
WIGS. Most doll wigs today are
ma.deof mohair-or combinations of mohair, wool and rayon. Some human
hair wigs are still available, but the quality is such that Wards prefer not to sell them. A good mohair wig is
more desirable and costs more than a poor quality human hair wig. All Wards Doll wigs (except those on
miniature and doll house dolls) are firmly sewed to cloth foundation ..• not Just pasted on head.
EYES. Eyes may
be
painted or of the movable, sleeping type. Though qen<l)"ally found on inexpensive dolls,
painted eyes may be used with great artistry on fine quality dolls ... see Etfanbee's Brother and Sister Dolls

base ...
second quality, printed directly on metal, do not hav1> the sparkle of Glassene eyes.
CLOTHrNG. Doll clothes vary in fabric, line, fitting aod linlshing. Those found on fine quality dolls are made of
the best fabrics and dress lines are well chosen. Garments fit nicely and finishing is detailed .•• dresses
have button or snap closings. Clothing on Jess expensive dolls is not so carefully made. Fabric is not so fine
... linishing is much less detailed • •• garments have pin closings.
