Hurdy-Gurdy with Cart
Over 50 years ago, Vincente Llinares
of Barcelona, Spain, began making
Hurdy-Gurdys and pianos. Before long,
his craftsmanship became famous and
his instruments were heard every–
where. It's even likely that many of the
famous organ grinders of Old New
York used Vincente's creations.
A lot of things have happened in
50
years.
If
anything, the Hurdy-Gurdys
made by Vincente Llinares' firm are
better now than they ever were. Cer–
t ainly this model's brilliant, clear
sound will kindle a nostalgic sensation
in your home when you crank out
"Sidewalks of New York."
Actually a Hurdy-Gurdy is a port·
· able barrel organ, and its inner work–
ings are similar to those of a piano.
But instead of a keyboard, the Hurdy–
Gurdy plays by turning a crank.
The mechanism is housed in a solid
wood case which is mounted on a
colorful pushcart and held secure by
2 leather straps. Both the organ and
its cart are carefully hand finished and
decorated until they fairly gleam.
Organ plays 6 tunes, chosen by turn–
ing a small selector knob: "Sidewalks
of New York", "My Blue Heaven",
"Arrivederci Roma", "La Cumpasita",
"Lara's Theme" (from
"Dr.
Zhivago")
and "Strangers in the Night".
The organ measures 23%x23%x
17~-in.
high while the rubber-tired
2-
wheel cart is 503Ax20Ysxl01,4-in. high.
Shpg. wt. 85 lbs.
