Mailing and Shipping Information Begins Here

CREDIT CUSTOMERS:

We figure taxes and your mailing or ship–

ping charges for you, then add them to your account. Send no

money; there is no need to read further unless you are ordering

something that is

not mailable

and wish to have it

delivered to your

home.

If so, please see "HOME DELIVERY CHARGES" at lower right.

Also read on page 240 how your Charge Account can help you

get your order faster.

TELEPHONE AND CATALOG CENTER CUSTOMERS:

We figure

taxes and transportation charges for you-whether you're paying

cash or using one of Penneys credit plans. There is no need to

read further. Turn to page 233 for the telephone number of your

local Penneys Catalog Center.

CASH CUSTOMERS ORDERING BY MAIL:

Please read these two

pages carefully; all of the information here concerns you. Please

send a check or money order for the price of your order, including

sales taxes (if any), and postage if the order is mailable. (We do

not accept C.O.D. orders.) Any extra postage you send will be re–

funded in full. For not·mailable orders, send check or money

order for price of your order, including sales taxes, but not ship–

ping charges. Pay REA-Express or Trucking charges when the or–

der is delivered. See "HOME DELIVERY CHARGES" at lower right.

Some descriptions of items in this catalog state that we pay post–

age or shipping. This means that Penneys will pay transportation

charges for that item (Hawaii and Alaska are usually excluded).

What Is Mailable and What Is Not?

All merchandise in our catalog is mailable unless it is described

as "mailability restricted" (see explanation in column at right) or

"not mailable" (see below). If the weight of an order consisting

entirely of mailable items exceeds the postal weight limitations,

we will divide the order into two or more parcels and mail each

one. But if the postage, then, is greater than the REA-Express or

Truck costs, we will ship the order as a single package by one of

those two carriers.

"Mailable Orders"

These items can be mailed to any zone. The 2 steps below tell you

how to estimate postage.

STEP

1-Determine your Postal Zone by locating your state on the

chart at right and finding the first 3 digits of your Zip Code in the

next column-the third column tells you your Postal Zone. For ex–

ample: If your state is Alabama and your Zip Code begins with

350, your Postal Zone is 2.

.

STEP

2-After you have added mailing weights to get the total

weight of your order, locate that weight in the Parcel Post Rate

Chart, page 240. Then find the Parcel Post charge in the column

that shows your Postal Zone at top. For example: If the weight of

your order is 8.40 lbs., and your Postal Zone is 2, include $1.15

postage.

If your order contains any not-mailable items, the entire order, in–

cluding any mailable items, will be shipped by REA-Express or

Truck-see next paragraph below. Therefore, do not send any

money for postage if there are any "not-mailable" items in your

order.

"Not·Malfable" Orders

Not-mailable orders are those which contain any not-mailable

merchandise, or which exceed the postal weight or size limits.

If your order cannot be mailed, it will be sent to you by REA·Ex–

press or Truck. Although your order will most likely be sent by

REA·Express because they generally do not charge for home de–

livery, we will ship by whichever method provides faster delivery

consistent with economical shipping costs. We will decide which

method is better, unless you specify your own preference on the

order form. Most trucking companies have an additional charge

for deliveries to private residences-see "Home Delivery Charges"

at right. It is always more costly to have not-mailable orders

shipped to your home than to a Catalog Center in a Penneys Store

-so it is to your benefit to order through a Catalog Center, par–

ticularly when the order cannot be mailed.

Do not send payment for shipping charges with your order. Ship–

ping costs are collected at time of delivery for all not-mailable

cash orders. We prepay all shipping costs on credit orders and add

them ta your account. Charges are based on weight and distance.

There is a minimum charge for each shipment (see chart on oppo–

site page). In most instances you may ship up to about 125 lbs. at

the minimum charge. Therefore, you may build up your order to

this weight without paying additional shipping charges.

Exceptions to Basic Shipping Rates

Although most of our not-mailable merchandise is shipped at the

rates shown in our chart (opposite page}, the exceptions listed be–

low may take a higher rate, and that rate will vary from state to

state. Charges for these exceptions may be between $6.05 and

$20.50 for shipments weighing up to 25 lbs., between $9.50 and

$30.00 for shipments weighing from 75 to 100 lbs. Because there

is such wide variation in these charges, we suggest that you con–

tact your local REA Express office and ask for an estimate of

transportation charges for the merchandise you plan to order–

or write to us at the address on page 240. You can save on these

charges by ordering through a Catalog Center in a Penneys Store.

you before making shipment.

"Mallabillty Restricted" Orders

These are items which can be mailed in some instances, and not

in others, due to postal restrictions on weight and/or size. If the

catalog description of the item you order says "Mailability re–

stricted", check with your Mailman or Postmaster to find out

whether yours is a 1st Class Post Office. If it is, the item is NOT

mailable to you. If yours is a 2nd, 3rd, or 4th Class Post Office, the

item IS mailable to you. See the instructions for Mailable and Not–

Mailable orders in column at left.

Factory-Shipped Merchandise

If the merchandise you order is going to be shipped direct to your

home from the factory, there will be a statement to this effect in

the item description. (Otherwise, all merchandise is shipped from

our Regional Distribution Centers in Milwaukee and Atlanta.)

Items that are shipped from the factory direct to your home may

be ordered with other goods; however, they will be shipped sepa–

rately with individual shipping charges. As soon as we receive

your order, an acknowledgment will be sent to you showing

the approximate date w.hen the merchandise will be shipped

(usually 3 to 6 weeks later). If a factory-shipped item is mailable,

we pay the postage. Not-mailable factory-shipped merchandise

will be shipped by the best method, considering factors of econ–

omy, speed, and service. Actual charges will differ somewhat,

depending on how .the merchandise is shipped.

Home Delivery Charges

REA-EXPRESS.

In most cities, within limits defined by REA-Ex–

press, the express charge you pay includes home delivery. There

are a few exceptions-in New York City, for example, there is an

extra charge of $5.00 for home delivery. If in doubt, check with

your local REA-Express office. If you live outside of the REA-Ex–

press home-delivery limits, you will be notified when your order

arrives ••. then you may pick it up at the.REA-Express terminal,

or make arrangements with a local trucking company to do so.

TRUCK FREIGHT.

Most trucking companies charge a minimum

of $5.25 (often it is more) for home delivery. This is in addition to

the charges shown in our chart on opposite page.

Sales Taxes

We are required by law to collect all sales taxes. If yours· is a

CASH order, include the total amount ef your sales taxes with your

payment at the time you order; any overpayment will be promptly

refunded. The chart on opposite page shows only your

state

sales

tax rate for each $1.00 of mer.chandise you order-be sure to

add any

local, city, and/or county

sales tax that applies to you. If

yours is a CREDIT order, don't bother to figure the sales tax-we'll

do it and add the correct amount to your invoice. In case of late

changes in sales tax rates, your invoice will show the correct up–

to-date amount whether yours is a cash or credit order.
